I do not give the details of the rest of

the Staff required, Vernacular Masters Pupil

Teachers etc. because I forsee no changes of

these of such importance as will call for the

approval of the Secretary of State.

These

minor adjustments can be made later, but they

should similarly be grouped together under the

one Heading.

SCHOOL FOR CHINESE GIRLS.

BELILIOS PUBLIC SCHOOL.

This school has 2 parts, an Upper School

preparing for the University Senior Local, and

a Lower School where English and Chinese are

taught. There are over 500 girls on the roll.

For the 3 Classes in the Upper School 3

English Assistant Mistresses are needed. Two

more will be required for the Lower School, and

this will leave the Headmistress and the Senior

Chinese Assistant Mistress for general control

and to cover absences on account of leave and

sickness. The Senior Chinese Assistant

Mistress, Misa Heang, was specially recommended

by me to the Salaries Commission for an increase

of salary.

In the past, a dearth of English speaking

Chinese girls has made it necessary to employ

Portuguese girls, who are more expensive, as

teachers. This state of affairs is disappearing
